Are there any visas issued specifically for Vietnamese nationals?
The legal framework for immigration in New Zealand is designed so that all foreigners have equal access to the visas prescribed here, therefore such visas are universal in the majority of cases. However, in certain situations, the legislation designs visas for certain nationalities, on account of various agreements established between the countries.
This is also the case of Vietnam. Thus, Vietnamese passport holders can relocate to New Zealand from Vietnam under 2 specific visas designed for the nationals of this country. The 2 visas are: the Vietnam Special Work Visa and the Vietnam Working Holiday Visa.
The Vietnam Special Work Visa
This visa is available for Vietnamese passport holders who can move to New Zealand from Vietnam because they have been offered a job in New Zealand. They can migrate to New Zealand provided that they have a work experience as a chef or as an engineering professional, therefore the visa can’t be obtained by any Vietnamese interested in job opportunities in this country.
Those who do not qualify for this visa because they have different work experience may apply for other work visas available for foreign nationals. The Vietnam Special Work Visa allows the issuance of 200 visas per year – 100 chefs and 100 engineering professionals can move to New Zealand from Vietnam with this visa. The advantage of this immigration document is that it offers long-term residency, of up to 3 years.
Additionally, visa holders can participate in training/study sessions of up to 3 months in a 12-month period. It is worth knowing that, although Vietnamese nationals can immigrate to New Zealand from Vietnam on a long-term basis, they can’t relocate with their close family members (this right can be offered for certain long-term work visas).
However, close family members can immigrate to New Zealand by applying for other visas, based on their connection to the applicant, who is a holder of the Vietnam Special Work Visa. You can refer your family members to our immigration lawyer in New Zealand for professional immigration assistance.
The work holiday program for Vietnamese in New Zealand
This visa program also allows 200 Vietnamese nationals to migrate to New Zealand. However, the program is addressed to young Vietnamese who will benefit from temporary residency rights. Some of the particularities of the visa are the following:
- it is addressed to young Vietnamese with an age of 18 to 30 years old;
- the length of stay is limited to 12 months;
- during the 12 months stay, Vietnamese can also participate in 6 months training/study;
- the New Zealand Immigration authorities charge a visa processing fee, of NZD 420;
- there are specific work obligations that must be met, such as working for one employer for maximum 3 months.
The work holiday program is available for several countries and differences can appear from one nationality to the other. For instance, those moving from USA to New Zealand are not bound by a visa quota, therefore New Zealand will accept as many Americans as will apply, as long as their applications meet the standard requirements.
These differences appear due to the rules on immigration to New Zealand and the agreements established with each partner country. If you want to find out more ways to immigrate to New Zealand from Vietnam, do not hesitate to contact our team.
